Candle care is a small ritual with a practical purpose. A little preparation before lighting, a thoughtful place to burn, and a moment to tend the candle afterward can make every use feel more considered.
Begin with the first burn
Set your candle on a level, heat-safe surface, away from drafts and anything that could catch fire. On its first lighting, allow the wax to melt across the surface from edge to edge. Depending on candle size and conditions, this often takes about two to four hours. Giving the first melt pool time to reach the edges helps reduce tunneling on later burns.
Keep each burn to four hours or less. When it is time to pause, extinguish the flame and let the wax cool and firm before trimming or lighting again.
Trim the wick before each lighting
Before lighting, trim the wick to about ¼ inch. A properly sized wick helps the flame stay steady and can reduce smoking, soot, and an oversized flame. Remove any trimmed pieces from the wax so the melt pool stays clear.
Luminous Wicks 10 oz candles have two wicks; trim both evenly. The 8 oz candles have one centered cotton wick. Follow any candle-specific directions on its label, and let the wax fully cool before tending the wicks.
Choose a safe setting
Burn your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface where it will not be knocked or exposed to a draft. Keep it away from curtains, paper, décor, and other flammable materials. Place it beyond the reach of children and pets, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
If the flame becomes unusually high or flickers persistently, extinguish the candle. Once the wax has cooled and hardened, trim the wick a little and relight when it is ready.
End the burn well
Use a candle snuffer, or gently dip the wick into the melted wax and straighten it again. Let the candle cool completely before moving it or replacing its lid. Stop using it when about ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel.
Care between burns
When the candle is cool, keep it covered with its lid to help keep dust from settling on the wax. Store it away from direct sunlight and extreme heat. Before the next lighting, check that the candle is on a level surface, clear of debris, and ready for a fresh wick trim.
A quieter kind of ritual
Taking a moment to trim the wick and prepare a calm, safe place is part of the pleasure of lighting a candle. With those simple steps in place, you can settle into the fragrance and let the evening unfold.
